Formation (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the PFE: Research Initiation in
Engineering Formation (RIEF) to support research in the
Professional Formation of Engineers (PFE) and increase
the community of researchers conducting PFE research.
Deadline: Nov. 10, 2020.
Funds: $3 million total for awards of up to $200,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said PIs are expected to have little or no
experience conducting social science or education
research. PFE: RIEF is not intended for established
researchers in engineering education or other social
science elds to initiate new projects.

Spectrum Innovation Initiative: National Center
for Wireless Spectrum Research (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Spectrum Innovation Initiative
(SII): National Center for Wireless Spectrum Research
announcement to go beyond 5G, IoT and other existing
or forthcoming systems and technologies and chart out
a trajectory to ensure U.S. leadership in future wireless
technologies, systems and applications in science and
engineering through the efficient use and sharing of the
radio spectrum.
Deadline: June 12, 2020.
Funds: $30 million total for up to 16 awards ranging
from $300,000 to $25 million.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: NSF said the SII Center should also seek to
foster scientic and technical collaboration and grow
the spectrum workforce. The establishment of an SII
Center will have a transformational impact on wireless
spectrum research by serving as a connecting point for
the biggest and most challenging questions in spectrum
management the nation is facing.
