The fact that Scott Lyon and Ken Gasch named their home-furnishings company for a hair dryer does not mean they're full of hot air.

Whimsy, yes. Hot air, no. Gasch and Lyon formed Denver-based Pfluffers (www.pfluffers.com) about 18 months ago to market the colorful home furnishings they frequently adorn with carved aluminum figures. The name stemmed from their use of an old hair dryer to blast air into their homemade casting furnace. "We threw the 'P' on just for fun," said Gasch.

"Fun" describes their inventory, as well. They make mirrors topped with acrylic flora from thistles to tulips, and urethane shadow boxes populated by cartoonish crews of cut-out paper aliens. New this fall are gumball machines that are part art, part arcade game. In "SS Bubblegum," for instance, each half-inch gumball drops into a fish's mouth, which in turn sends it through a maze of bright-colored, moving sea critters before...
