No one can say you didn't make a smart choice. The November 15, 1999, UPFRONT asked readers to select the Person of the Millennium. We suggested 10 possibilities, from GENGHIS KHAN to NELSON MANDELA, and invited readers to go beyond those 10 and tell us who else we should have suggested. More than 400 of you responded, and the winner--drum roll please--was ALBERT EINSTEIN.

The scientist, whose theory of relativity revolutionized 20th-century physics, got twice as many votes as second-place JOHANN GUTENBERG, the inventor of the movable-type printing press. And readers passed over seven of our nominees to make MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. the fourth-place vote-getter.

Leaving King off the list was our biggest omission, you thought, but other write-in favorites ranked high, too, including MOTHER TERESA (number 10 overall); ABRAHAM LINCOLN (11); PRINCESS DIANA (13); ADOLF HITLER (14); and LEONARDO DA VINCI (16).
