Pentagon hosts seminars on U.S. energy 'addiction'.

Retired Navy Adm. Frank L. (Skip) Bowman, president and CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute, will discuss the outlook for nuclear power at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18.

The event, to be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Crystal City, Va., is part of an ongoing series of seminars entitled "Energy: A Conversation About Our National Addiction." The series is sponsored by the Defense Department's Office of Force Transformation and the undersecretary for acquisition, technology and logistics, assisted by the National Defense Industrial Association.

NDIA'S participation in the series is part of its efforts to draw more attention to energy's growing role in national security issues. The association is in the process of forming a new Energy Security Committee within its longstanding Environment and Energy Division, said the division chairman, Vincent Ciccone.

The seminars are intended to help inform Pentagon leaders as they draft a new department-wide guidance on energy, said acting OFT Director Terry Pudas. The focus is on identifying concrete steps the Pentagon can begin implementing immediately to conserve energy, he said.

Pudas cited a study by the Rocky Mountain Institute, noting that the Army spends about $200 million a year on fuel and an additional $3.2 billion per year on 20,000 active and 40,000 reserve personnel to actually move it.
