GRENADA'S July general elections were "orderly and peaceful," and anxieties expressed beforehand by various participants in the process "proved unfounded," OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin told the Permanent Council.

The National Democratic Congress, led by Tillman Thomas, won eleven of the fifteen parliamentary seats at stake, defeating incumbent Keith Mitchell's New National Party.

Ramdin, who headed the 38-member OAS team that observed the voting process, said the monitors visited all the country's polling stations at least once. "There were no reported instances of unruly behavior or intimidation of voters at polling sites or of any serious irregularities," he said, adding that voter turnout was estimated to be above 80 percent.
