If you e-file a return the day it is due--or even the day before--and ask the IRS to take an electronic payment from the taxpayer's account, it may be considered a late payment.

The Dept. of Treasury needs 48 hours notice to get a payment, so it could take that long for it to receive acknowledgement of the IRS' receipt of the payment.
