New employees are definitely going to be on the payroll, but what should a company do about interns? Are employers required to pay interns? Linda Duckworth, human resource advisor with The Employers Council in Salt Lake City, advises following guidelines established by the U.S Department of Labor, stating an intern must meet six criteria to qualify as an unpaid staff member:

  1. The internship is similar to training given in an educational environment.

  2. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern.

  3. The intern does not displace regular employees and works under close supervision.
