This first Indian edition of Bohtlingk's work is a reprint of the second edition, published in 1887 and reprinted in 1964. The Indian edition includes a forword by Prem Singh (pp. ix--xiv), followed by Bohtlingk's introduction (pp. xv--xxviii), and a preface by Albrecht Wezler (pp. xxix-xxxi), as well as seven pages of corrections (pp. xxxiii-xxxix), which incorporate corrections noted by R. Rocher in her review of the European reprint (Kratylos 10 [1965]: 67-70). The remainder of the work is as originally published. The first part contains the sivasutrani with explanation (p. 1), the Astadhyayl with German translation, examples, brief comments and cross references (pp. 2-476), as well as additions and corrections (pp. 477-80) that incorporate valuable comments by Kielhorn on the text. The second part contains: an alphabetic index of sutras (pp. [1.sup.*]-[60.sup.*], the dhatupatha as determined by Westergaard (pp. [61.sup.*]-[84.sup.*]), alphabetical index of roots (pp. [84.sup.*]-[94.sup.*]), the ganapatha (pp. [95.sup.*]-[145.sup.*]), index of nonmeaningful grammatical elements, including markers, with explanations (pp. [146.sup.*]-[87.sup.*]), index of affixes without their markers (pp. [187.sup.*]-[92.sup.*]), Panini's vocabulary (pp. [193.sup.*]-[296.sup.*]), topical index (pp. [297.sup.*]-[300.sup.*])--in which German grammatical terms are followed by Sanskrit equivalents or quasi-equivalents--the vocabulary of the ganapatha (pp. [301.sup.*]-[57.sup.*]), corrections (p. [358.sup.*]).

Wezler's preface is mainly, and appropriately, an appreciation of Bohtlingk's life and work as well as an apologia for the present reprint. He praises (p. xxx) Bohtlingk's restraint in not dealing with too many problems at once, so that he could produce an annotated translation of the Astadhyayi in one volume, points out that this would be difficult at present, and refers to S. M. Katre's translation as a notable exception. Wezler goes on to note (p. xxx): "There can hence be no doubt that the present reprint meets an existing demand and will hopefully be welcomed by the academic community and perhaps by even the modern vaiyakaranas who were not able to acquire the costly 1964 reprint made by G.
