The other day, a regular contributor to ABM pitched an article on women and glass ceilings in Alaska. I'm sure, in some areas, a glass ceiling exists. But looking at the number of women who head their own companies in Alaska, you would think there are plenty of opportunities for women to advance and achieve.

Our database came up with 385 women-owned businesses in the state who report gross annual revenues of $250,000 or more. These women are heads of companies that are involved in nearly every possible field you can think of--everything from communications, to medical billing, to health care, to finance, to veterinary services, to contracting--and much, much more.

But truly the scope of women-owned businesses is much broader than that. According to the U.S. Census, there were nearly 20,000 majority-owned, privately held women-owned firms in Alaska as of 2002. This accounts for 32 percent of all privately held firms in the state. These firms employ nearly 27,000 individuals and generate more than $3.3 billion in sales, according to the Center for Women's Business Research.

The Center for Women's Business Research estimated that there are nearly 5,000 women-owned employer firms in Alaska.

This is the first year Alaska Business Monthly has acknowledged the Top Women-Owned Businesses in the state, a long overdue directory. ABM employees recognize the growing importance of women in business and want to do something to highlight these growing companies that bring economic benefit to the many communities they serve.

Of the 84 companies featured in this listing, a total of 2,181 jobs were created as a result of these businesses. Many report gross annual revenues of up to $5 million. We hope to feature even more women-owned businesses next year and in the years to come. Only businesses that returned surveys were included in this listing.
