Regarding your cover story in the October issue, I am left wondering what you hoped to accomplish with an article that is filled with errors and distortions of fact. Why would a magazine that promotes businesses in this state want to cast such a cloud over a North Carolina event that is attracting positive attention around the world and one that will bring thousands of people to the Outer Banks in December?

I do not understand how dredging up ancient history without balancing it with what is taking place today is useful in any way. State agencies and Outer Banks organizations are working together as a team to make the 100th anniversary of flight a meaningful and lasting experience for those who visit Wright Brothers National Memorial, now and in the future. The centennial celebration, Dec. 12-17, will be an exciting and entertaining six days of themed events, with national music attractions, air shows and much, much more. Far from your characterization of the event as a "shadow of what was envisioned," the celebration will be a fitting tribute to the Wright brothers and their milestone flight. It also will be in keeping with the park's capacity.

To say there have been only a few flight-related festivities around the state is simply untrue. Since the kickoff of the centennial year last December, the first flight has been the focus of literally hundreds of celebrations across the entire state, including more than 30 World Flight 2003 air shows and year-long exhibits at the N.C.
