Billings continues as Montana's major trade and service center, but the trade center components are starting to diverge. Whole sale trade and parts of retail trade (especially general merchandise stores) have shown some softening in the latest data. However, business and professional services growth continues to be strong. Both the preliminary income and employment data for 2000 show some slowing in Yellowstone County's economy.
