Permanent Observer to the United Nations MICHELE KLEIN SOLOMON
Established in 1951, the International
Organization for Migration (IOM) is the
leading intergovernmental organization in
the f‌i eld of migration. With 149 member
states, a further 12 states holding observer
status and off‌i ces in over 100 countries,
IOM is dedicated to promoting humane
and orderly migration for the benef‌i t of
all. It does so by providing services and
advice to migrants and governments,
while working in close cooperation with
governmental, intergovernmental, and
non-governmental partners. IOM has
observer status at the United Nations.
IOM works with its partners to meet
the growing operational challenges
of migration management; advance
understanding of migration issues;
encourage social and economic
development through migration; and
uphold the human dignity and well-being
of migrants.
IOM has been at the forefront of
emergency response to ensure assistance
and protection to stranded migrants and
displaced persons. IOM has a lead role
under the UN Cluster Approach in Camp
Co-coordination and Camp Management
in Natural Disasters and is a key partner
in Emergency Shelter, Logistics, Health,
Protection and Early Recovery.
IOM’s expertise and services also
include: providing secure, reliable,
and cost-effective services for persons
requiring migration assistance; promoting
humane and orderly management of
migration and the effective respect for
the human rights of migrants; providing
expert advice, technical cooperation,
and operational assistance to build
national capacities and facilitate
cooperation on migration matters;
assisting states to facilitate the integration
of migrants in their new environment
and to engage diasporas, including as
development partners; advising states
in the development and delivery of
programs and technical expertise to
combat migrant smuggling and human
traff‌i cking; working with national health
systems to reduce mortality, morbidity,
and disabilities and to enhance access
to rights-based health and well-being
services throughout the migration cycle;
and working with states in the area of
labor migration, amongst others.
