Bethel's Hub

Bethel, with nothing but the wind between it and the Bering Sea, is busy for a tundra town of 5,200. As a hub for the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta's 56 villages, it's the fourth busiest airport in the state, said Norm Gommoll, a specialist in air traffic with the Federal Aviation Administration. Traffic flow is increasing. In fiscal year 1996, the number of landings and takeoffs was 115,153, while last fiscal year the number rose to 128,863.
