Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro has launched an investigation into the Federal National Mortgage Association, commonly known as Fannie Mae, a federally chartered corporation that promotes homeownership.

The investigation will determine if accounting irregularities at Fannie Mae caused losses for Ohio's public pension funds, many of whom were investors in Fannie Mae securities. Information from the investigation could become the basis of a possible lawsuit according to Petro's office.
