William G. "Bill" Haynes (1/25/1931 - 1/3/2024)
William G. "Bill" Haynes, 92, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024. He was born on Jan. 25, 1931, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Emily and Floyd Haynes. Bill attended Boswell Junior High and Topeka High School and joined the Air Force ROTC. He was the rush captain for the Alpha Delta Fraternity at Washburn University where he graduated with a degree in economics.
Bill was then stationed in Texas, Louisiana, and Okinawa, Japan, as a first lieutenant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the U.N. Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. William married Lois Gerry Haynes on March 22, 1952. He attended Washburn University School of Law in 1954 and was a member of the Washburn Law Review Board, the Washburn Bar Association, and the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity. In 1957, he was a trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board and the Labor Council for the Kansas Contractors Association. From 1959 to 1960, he was a lecturer at St. Louis University on the subjects of labor economics and labor legislation. Bill practiced law in Topeka for more than 30 years and was a law partner with Eidson, Lewis, Porter &Haynes and later joined the law firm of Frieden, Haynes &Forbes. He was a member of the Kansas Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Missouri Bar Association.
Bill was elected to the Topeka City Council, where he worked with his close childhood friend Mayor Bill Bunton to prevent any increases in the property tax mill levy and always focused on decreasing expenditures instead of raising taxes. Bill was always ready to help someone in need, especially when they needed free legal advice. He enjoyed conversations that focused specifically on politics, finances, economics, and world affairs. Bill had a refined taste in music, and every ride in his car was accompanied by Frank Sinatra. He enjoyed flying to Las Vegas and traveling throughout the United States and many countries overseas. Bill and Lois were past owners of the historic Capper, Curtis, and Senate apartments and spent many years renovating them to their original condition. He was a member of the Countryside Methodist Church and enjoyed many activities with his grandchildren and weekly family dinners at Cracker Barrel and IHOP.
Bill is survived by two sons, William and Michael (Noelia); a daughter-in-law, Bobbi; five grandchildren, Bailey, Gracie, Will (Olivia), Sheldon (Chris), and Samuel; and two nephews, Mark and Randy Morgan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; a son, Steven; a grandson, Spencer; and his sister, Barbara Morgan.

Thomas C. "Tom" Henderson, 75, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, in Topeka. He was born July 29, 1948, in Topeka to Glen and Mary (Furgason) Henderson and was a 1966 graduate of Topeka High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Washburn University in 1971 and his Juris Doctor from Washburn University School of Law in 1974. Tom married Cinda Sue Foster on April 8, 1972, in Topeka.
