His campaign for president used the Internet in ground-breaking fashion and, according to President-Elect Baraek Obama's aides, his presidency will be the first truly "wired" one.

During his almost two-year-long campaign, Obama collected millions of e-mail addresses and other details about donors and volunteers. According to The Washington Post, Obama's e-mail database includes information about more than 10 million supporters.

Obama's team has been readying a major expansion of the White House communications operation that will allow it to reach out directly to the supporters it has amassed over the past two years while bypassing the mainstream media. In fact, the Post said Obama officials plan to add a significant "new media" component to the White House communications system. With 95 staff members who focused on the Internet operation during the campaign, Obama built a user-friendly website that served as a platform for grass-roots activities and distributed statements, policy positions, and footage of candidate Obama's events. The White House web operation will follow a similar model, transition officials told the Post.

"He's going to be the first president to be connected in this way, directly, with millions of Americans," Joe Trippi, a Democratic strategist, told the Post.
