Contraception is an essential part of preventive care and all women should have unhindered and affordable access to all contraceptives approved by the Food and Drug Administration, concludes a committee opinion from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Washington, D.C.

"Contraception improves the health of women, children, and families as well as communities overall; reduces maternal mortality; and enhances economic stability for women and their families. The value of contraception has been proven time and again," declares Wanda Nicholson, chair of the Committee on Health Care for Underserved Women, which compiled the recommendations. 'With 49% of pregnancies unintended, it is clear that we need to work hard to Improve access to more-effective contraceptive methods like long-acting reversible contraceptives."
