NSF releases $60M
for Antarctic research
The National Science Foundation’s Ofce of
Polar Programs (OPP) recently announced $60
million in funding for the Antarctic Research
solicitation.
The OPP said funding may be used for scientic
research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean with
logistics provided by OPP’s Antarctic Infrastructure
and Logistics Section (AIL).
According to the funding opportunity announce-
ment, priorities include research that:
• Improves understanding of interactions among
the Antarctic region and global systems;
• Expands fundamental knowledge of Antarctic
systems, biota, and processes; and
• Utilizes the unique characteristics of the
Antarctic region as a science-observing platform.
OPP said proposals advancing research through
synthesis, data and sample re-use, modeling, and
development of predictive tools are encouraged as
well as research that capitalizes on unique features
of the Antarctic continent, and its atmosphere, for
scientic research.
Awards are expected to range from $500,000 to
$1.5 million, OPP said.
Eligible entities include for-prot organizations,
including small businesses; nonprot organizations;
state, local, special district, and Native American
tribal governments; independent school districts
and qualied individuals, among others.
There is no deadline to apply. Applications are
accepted on a rolling basis.
OPP’s funding strategy is guided by the National
Academies of Sciences August 2015 report entitled
“A Strategic Vision for NSF Investments in Ant-
arctic and Southern Ocean Research.” (https://bit.
