Riders of Boston's MBTA use the Transit app to plan trips and get real-time information on service, but little has been done with this treasure trove of data --until now. Daniel T. O'Brien, associate professor in the School of Public Policy at North-eastern University, is leading a team of researchers who are organizing the numbers into a much more accessible database. The findings will have implications beyond Boston, as the Transit app is used in more than 175 cities worldwide.

Hate crimes have risen nationally by 22% since 2013, according to a study by Safe-Home.org. Racial animosity accounts for 60% of all single-bias offenses, followed by religion (21%) and sexual orientation (16%). Some 51% of offenders were Caucasian; 83% were 18 and older. African-Americans were the most-targeted racial group, accounting for nearly 50% of all race-related incidents. Jews were the most-targeted religious group, accounting for 58% of all religious incidents, followed by Muslims at 19%.

In metro cities, the average tech salary is nearly double--sometimes triple--the average state salary, relates a report by Business.org, which also found: nationwide, tech salaries are an average of 66% higher than other occupations; San Jose, Calif., pays tech employees the most in the nation, with an average annual salary of $117,000; Daytona Beach, Fla., has the...
