Searching for the fountain of youth, some people are risking long-term health problems by injecting themselves with a daily dose of human growth hormone, warns Craig Rubin, the head of geriatrics, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. "Studies of HGH given to older individuals have shown changes in body composition and increased muscle mass, but, most importantly, there was no significant improvement in muscle strength or exercise ability." Meanwhile, studies indicate that minimal use of the drug may lead to diabetes and/or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Baby boomers have already accumulated more wealth than their parents did at a similar age, according to an Ohio State University, Columbus, study. Researcher Lisa Keister predicts that the gap will continue as they retire, and that they will actually go on compiling wealth after retirement. This may ease concerns that the Social Security System will fail as the glut of baby boomers leaves the workplace.

Workers inclined to change jobs in hopes of higher salaries may think twice before leaping too many times. A survey by Robert Half International Inc., a national staffing service specializing in the accounting, finance, and information technology fields, found that having as many as four jobs in 10 years can negatively impact one's career.

Jobs requiring college degrees will become increasingly common, making for a brighter employment market for graduates, indicates Patricia Bergmaier, career center director, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. "Overall, employers expect to make nearly one-fifth of their job offers [in 2001] to new college graduates."
