16 NOTES TO TABLES OIL AND ENERGY TRENDS, OCTOBER 2016
Notes to tables
The present notes to the statistical tables are both general and note notes to the items carrying an asterisk (). In
several of the time series, there are sometimes revisions to the previous month’s data. These are not footnoted.
A number of countries do not publish monthly figures, or publish them only after long delays. Consequently year
averages are used in several of the series for many of the monthly figures shown, or, in the current calendar year,
estimates based on the previous year.
Source of the data on the UK in tables 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12 is Energy Trends, adapted and reproduced with permission
of the Controller of HMSO.
Tables 1 & 2: New E & P Agreements—Oil and
Gas Discoveries
Discontinued.
Table 3: Estimated Number of Rigs Active
Rigs active means rigs making new holes and
workovers. Figures for Kuwait and Saudi Arabia
exclude the Neutral Zone.
Table 4: World Crude and NGLs Production
Includes crude oil, field/lease condensate, and
natural gas liquids produced from NGL plants.
OPEC countries started to produce monthly
figures from November 1994; earlier figures
are estimates based on press reports and other
sources.
Data for Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan was
revised creating a discontinuity in the series
from January 2014 (Vol 39 Iss 1)
Table 6: Coal and Lignite Production
United Kingdom: monthly data are based on
four or five week averages, depending on the
month.
Brazil and Chile. Includes flared and waste gas.
Table 7: Net Electricity Production
In March 1994 this table was revised to give
figures in terms of net generation for all
countries. This revision creates a discontinu-
ity with electricity series published in OET
before March 1994; Japan: public utilities only;
Brazil: excludes industry generation for own
use; Venezuela: national grid only.
The data series for Pakistan in table 7d was
substantially revised in September 2012 (Vol 37
Issue 9).
Data for Other Europe for the period October
2011 to September 2012 (Vol. 37 Iss. 2-12) has
been revised from Vol. 38 Iss 1.
Data for Venezuela was revised in September
2015, creating a discontinuity with the series
before January 2013.
Table 8: Production from Refineries
From Vol. 37 Iss. 4 Aviation Fuel and Kerosene
appear as one column.
Retrospective changes have been made to
figures in this table previously using formulas
where new data is available.
Australia: naphtha included in ‘Other’.
Germany includes GDR (East Germany) from
January 1991.
Japan: excludes minor products from 1990.
Table 9: Refinery Runs
Crude oil processed. Excludes unfinished prod-
ucts further processed.
Germany includes GDR (East Germany) from
January 1991.
Table 10: World Demand
Includes international bunkers and refinery
fuel. Germany includes GDR (East Germany)
from January 1991.
Slovenia and Estonia data included in Other
OECD Europe from January 2013. This table
was revised after the identification of an error
which caused oil demand figures for Republic
of Korea to be inflated. The revision creates a
discontinuity in the series from December 2013
(Vol 38 Iss 12).
Table 11: Oil Demand by Product: Selected
Countries
Brazil: excludes fuel-alcohol. Kero/Jet & LPG
included in ‘All Others’.
Hong Kong: includes small amounts of re-
exports to Macao and China.
Mexico: excludes refinery fuel and petro-
chemical feedstocks.
Table 13: Crude Oil Netback Values

Table 14.1: Spot Crude Oil Prices
These are assessed or estimated prices and val-
ues for the major types of crude oils traded on
spot markets.
Table 14.3: Non-OPEC Crude Oil Sales Prices
These are official sales prices (except as other-
wise noted) and are generally market-related,
subject in some cases to retroactive adjustment.
Table 15: Spot Refined Product Prices
Discontinued.
Table 16: Oil and the Balance of Trade
As of January 2012 figures are reported in US
dollars. Value of Net Oil Imports is reported
annually.
Table 17: Net Imports of Crude and Products

Netherlands and Russian Federation replaced
by Belgium and Germany. Italy: Imports from
Netherlands and Russian Federation replaced
by Austria and Qatar.
Table 20: Spot (Dirty) Tanker Fixtures and
Freight Rates
Freight rates in %Ws are calculated from all
dirty spot fixtures for which rates were reported
during the month.
Table 22: Spot Freight Rates —by Tanker Size
Average spot freight rates (ASFR): averages of
all spot freight rates, by cargo size, reported
each month.
Spot (Dirty) PG– West %W: weighted average
of spot rates reported during the month for
Persian Gulf– West hauls.
Spot (Dirty) RT– Rott.: Ras Tanura to Rot-
terdam. Rates refer to Worldscale for current
year.

tries
