The articles in this symposium discuss North American contrasts in
antitrust, regulatory, legislative, and judicial practices with respect to
banking and finance. Some reasons for Canada’s success are looked
at and contrasted with U.S. strategies. Comparative study of how
two close neighbors differently address the institutions most
associated with the recent economic dislocation may help readers in
both locales to improve and reform the key institutions responsible
for t he all oca tio n of ca pita l and t he co nseq uen t pat h of fu ture
financial innovation and growth.
I. CANADIANS VIEW THEIR OWN RECORD, STUDY THE
AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, AND LOOK FORWARD
Katherine Kalinins and Thomas Velk first present a brief update on
the current state of the Dodd-Frank Act and its existing regulations,
noting how many of the Act’s rules are yet to be written. They then
discuss some proposals for future legislation. They also note that
