Risk-taking requires creativity
In a Charitychannel.com article by
Karen Eber Davis, “Nonprofit Risk-
taking: The Risk of Not Risking,” the
author describes how the Museum
of Science and Industry (MOSI) in
Tampa, Florida, resolved a $400,000
budget shortfall some time back
through creative use of Yu-Gi-Oh!
trading cards.
Yu-Gi-Oh! is a Japanese collectible
trading card game popular with youth.
In tournaments, players compete for
prizes (http://www.yugioh-card.com/
en/).
According to Davis, six attempts at
tournaments using these trading cards
marketed to teens failed, but four
worked and filled the budget gap. She
cites these principles the MOSI used
and called them “repeatable.”
Find multiple solutions. MOSI
generated ten ideas.”
Pilot the solutions. Each team
generated a test pilot.”
Be thrifty. MOSI began with a
one-time tournament, used trading
cards for prizes, and generated free
media.”
Measure results. Four solutions
generated income.”
Anticipate failure. Six ideas
failed.”
Capitalize on success. As long as
the fad engaged youth, MOSI held Yu-
Gi-Oh! Tournaments.”
