In February, the Defense Department canceled its plans to conduct a nonnuclear explosion over a desert in Nevada. The experiment, dubbed "Divine Strake," would have ignited 700 tons of explosives at the Nevada Test Site. The plans prompted widespread protests from people who feared it would kick up radioactive material from previous blasts.
