Pilot Error

From The Washington Post's "In the Loop" column on a speech former Interior Department member Amos Eno made as he presented "The Chuck Yeager Award" at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Region's annual ceremony: "Eno began by saying he knew Yeager and that the famed pilot ... was someone who knew how to `stand up to the powers that be' and fight for his cause. By way of example, Eno said he and Yeager had warred constantly with Bush Administration Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan Jr., and that at one point Yeager got so fed up he went to complain to President Bush directly.... `Mr. President, get that damned chile-eater off [our] foundation's back.' [Eno prefaced this by saying] `I hope there are no Hispanics in the room.'"

From the Albany, New York, Times Union on the U.S. Customs' decision to start using high-tech scanners at airports to see through passengers' clothing in an attempt to find contraband: "Privacy advocates say the technology's capability to show the full external contours of the body, including male and female private areas, is an `electronic strip search' that erodes constitutional protections and is more invasive than a frisk.... The body scanner can show `underneath clothing, and with clarity, breasts or a penis and the relative dimensions of each,' said Gregory T. Nojeim, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union. `The system has a joy-stick-driven zoom option that allows the operator to enlarge portions of the image.' ... The manufacturer of the scanner says that the concerns are excessive. `You don't get the women's cup size in terms of a bra, or how big a man is,' said Robert Peters, vice president of American Science and Engineering of Billerica, Massachusetts."

A Notable Mistake
