Nieuwenhuizen is an Australian teacher who has spent a long career encouraging people to read, especially young people. This reference book is of special interest to those of us who also have been thoroughly immersed in YA literature, and for those new to the field, even adolescents themselves. Most of the 500 books are from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK; many are from the US and some are translated from other languages. The format is attractive, from the cover photograph to the layout and the frequent b/w illustrations of book covers. One page may feature one author and one book, but then there are other suggestions of books from the same author, or lists of similar books, some classics, some adult fare.

There are many books about Afghanistan, from Deborah Ellis's books about refugees, to Staples's Under the Persimmon Tree, to The Kite Runner and The Sewing Circles of Herat.
