The fiscal year 2013 budget proposal

calls for delaying work on replacing the Ohio-class of nuclear and ballistic missile submarines by two years. It also calls for the preservation of the defense industrial base. Are these two proposals at odds? With only two companies capable of building submarines, can the Pentagon both preserve the work force and ensure that there are no gaps in its boomer fleets at the end of the next decade?

Tactical Vehicles

At an annual gathering of industry and military officials to discuss tactical wheeled vehicles, Army leaders described a future in which they would buy fewer trucks and continue to reduce the numbers of vehicles in the fleet. The lack of new opportunities has those in the truck industry pondering where they can fit into the Army's scaled back plans and what chances they may have to do business in other countries.
