Ground Combat Simulators

* Military officials have long touted simulations for being a low-cost way to quickly and repeatedly conduct training exercises. However, a recent Government Accountability Office report asserted that those benefits might not be as clear-cut as previously believed. The Army and Marine Corps need to institutionalize a more comprehensive way to measure the cost of simulations, as well as establish metrics that can measure how much a simulator has improved troop performance, the report stated. National Defense investigates the cost benefits of simulations.

Naval Training

* As a way to save money and reduce risk to its littoral combat ships, the Navy has mandated that most of the crew's training will be done on shore through simulation-based courseware. Cubic in January was awarded contracts up to $300 million to provide a curriculum for both variants of the LCS and its mission modules. So far, this program has been able to avoid budget cuts, but the Navy this summer delayed a contract award for the ship's mission bay trainer. Will the Navy have the money to fund these simulations?
