Air Force Trainer

* With so few new big ticket military hardware programs in the pipeline, major contractors are gearing up for the acquisition of the Air Force's upcoming T-X jet fighter trainer. Partnerships have been formed, and the marketing has already begun even though the start date is several years away. Training aircraft are not among the most glamorous aviation programs, but with a planned buy of 350, competition in these austere times will be keen.

Army Training

* During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, conventional Army forces and Special Operations forces often worked together to deal with the counterinsurgency threat. As the conflict in Afghanistan draws to a close and focus shifts to the Asia Pacific, the Army finds itself facing hybrid threats that combine conventional foes with guerrilla, terrorist or criminal groups. U.S. Army Gen. Ray Odierno is revamping Army training to increasingly incorporate special operations forces, reflecting changing battlefields as well as budget cuts that will downsize the Army by 80,000 in the coming five years.
