EVERY JANUARY, we talk about our New Year's resolutions but, by February, most of us have forgotten about them. For many women, the resolution is self-improvement--making changes to how we look, which often reflects how we feel. Change is hard and it takes confidence, sometimes testing our courage. It makes you challenge that inner voice called self-esteem; that voice sometimes can get the best of you, especially when your appearance comes into play. Here are some ways to challenge your inner voice and have the hair you've always wanted:

Speak up. If you are unhappy with your hairstylist or what he or she does, voice your displeasure or find a new stylist. Do not leave the salon hating the way you look. Never say, "I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings." This is not about their feelings; it is about yours.

Change does not need to be huge. We all get caught in ruts, and many clients seem to think making a change has to be blonde to dark or long to short. Sometimes the smallest tweak can make a huge difference. Taking just a couple of inches off can result in a refreshed shape. Similarly, a shade or two darker or lighter, altering your hair tone, or adding a highlight here and there can make a stale color look new and alive.

Do not think that to be "in" you have to do what everyone else is doing. I love that clients get inspiration from their favorite celebrities, and it can be a great visual to show your stylist but be realistic. Is that style really for you? Will it work for your lifestyle? What is the maintenance and cost for upkeep? Will you need a "glam squad" to make it look good every day? Think about why you love the "it" style; sometimes it really is not about the hair. To me, style is seeing a woman feel confident in what she is wearing. It is about you wearing the style, not the style wearing you.

Do not commit if you are not ready. One of the biggest mistakes women often make is wanting bangs. You either will love them or hate them. Once you go "under the shears," there is no going back. The growing-out process can be brutal and it involves a lot of hairpins, time, and, sometimes, a few tears. If you are not 100% sure that bangs are going to be your best decision, I recommend using clip-ins. They are commitment free and allow you to see if you really want to go there or are content simply to keep flirting with the idea.

Do not settle for old-looking hair. Everyday living, the environment, overprocessing, age, and a lack of TLC...
