As the newly hired Board of Bar Examiners (BBE) director, attorney Jacquelynn B. Rothstein will be getting some firsthand experience with a source of frustration for many practitioners: she will report her Continuing Legal Education credits though an online system established by the BBE.

When the voluntary program launched last year, there were problems with attorneys' ability to input credits. According to former BBE head John Kosobucki, the issues with the online system were severe enough to lead to his termination by the state Supreme Court in May.

While many of the bugs have been ironed out, Rothstein, who starts on January 4, said she wants to evaluate whether any additional improvements are necessary.

I'll sort of be a guinea pig and see how this works, she said of her plan to report online.

At the time of his departure, Kosobucki described the vast majority of complaints as minor, having to do with misread instructions, operator errors or forgotten user names.

Rothstein noted that the agency doesn't have the luxury of throwing millions of dollars at revamping the system.

Rothstein is still getting to know BBE board members and has not yet developed any specific agenda. But she does plan to draw...
