IRS Case Processing Controls Need to Be Improved

According to a new audit report released by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), the IRS is detecting more cases or identity theft though its Taxpayer Protection Program, but case processing controls need to he strengthened to reduce the burden on taxpayers who are the victims of this crime.

TIGTA found that the Taxpayer Protection Program improves identity theft detection. For example, in 2012 the program identified 321,670 tax returns that involved identity theft.
