Springing Into the Year As Winter Thawed (Almost)

It was a long winter but the New Jersey Chapter didn't let the snow and ice keep it from continuing its hot educational activities. The Chapter sponsored three all-day seminars and hosted its Women's Network initiative. June ushers in the annual Region II Tax Forum which this year features speakers from KPMG LLP and Skadden Arps LLP.

On Friday, February 21, 2014, one of the NJ Chapter's three annual all-day seminars was held at the Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph, NJ. The primary sponsor of the seminar was Ernst & Young LLP. This year's president, Austin Murphy, along with the Committee Chairs, worked closely with Mike Goldsmith, E&Y Partner, to organize an outstanding program in the areas of federal, international, and state & local taxes. The participation of twelve other E&Y partners in presenting on the hottest areas in the tax field today insured that the day would be a success; drawing the largest turnout of the year. Other presenters included Darren Mills, a partner at Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, and Bob Adams and Patti Burquest, partner at McGladrey LLP on federal topics; John Warner, a co-managing shareholder of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, and C. Mitchell Siegel, a partner at McGladrey LLP on international topics; and Don Roveto, a Managing Director at Alvarez & Marsal Taxand LLC, and Michael Guariglia and David Shipley, partners at McCarter & English LLP, on state and local topics.

On Friday, March 28, 2014, the NJ Chapter held a special State & Local Tax seminar presented entirely by Grant Thornton LLP. Charles Hayes on the NJ Chapter Board was our liaison with Grant Thornton to develop a program on a wide array of subjects. Grant Thornton pulled out all the stops bringing in twenty presenters ranging from Managers to Partners to Managing Directors covering both a Northeast and National legislative and regulatory update, tax accounting and tax provision updates, and sessions on sales & use taxes, escheat and unclaimed property laws, and real & personal property taxes. Grant Thornton also arranged for Michael Bryan, Director of the NJ Division of Taxation, to give the luncheon keynote address. Although the temperature in the meeting room brought back memories of the past few winter months, the 75 TEI members or staff that attended all agreed that they had participated in an exciting, informative and illuminating day in all areas of state taxes.
