Robert Ellis Smith's new edition Compilation of State and Federal Privacy Laws, shows a 10 percent increase in privacy laws since the 2000 book.
States have been passing new laws requiring telemarketers to consult state-run do-not-call lists and legislation making theft of another person's identity a serious crime. The 2002 compilation also includes information on use of genetic information, either in employment or insurance.
