NEH partnership provides
$7M to humanities education
The National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH) and The Teagle Foundation have announced
a partnership to sponsor a new grant program to
reinvigorate the humanities in general education on
campuses across the country.
The two institutions have jointly pledged $7
million to fund Cornerstone: Learning for Living
grants to colleges and universities to develop and
implement new pathways within the undergrad-
uate curriculum that will give students from all
backgrounds the chance to experience the power of
the humanities under the mentorship of committed
teachers, and help them connect the humanities to
their professional aspirations, NEH said.
“The humanities help us make sense of ourselves,
our culture, and our place in the world,” said NEH
Chairman Jon Parrish Peede in a statement. “NEH
is proud to partner with The Teagle Foundation
to put the humanities at the center of general
education, giving today’s college students the tools
necessary to meet the challenges of tomorrow.”
According to an NEH release, the initiative
aims to provide all students with the opportunity
to broaden their understanding of the world and
themselves, while strengthening the skills to read
closely, write clearly, speak with condence, and to
engage with differing viewpoints and perspectives—
all capacities cultivated by the humanities that are
crucial for participation in our democracy.
Eligible applicants include a broad array of insti-
tutions, including community colleges, STEM-ori-
ented institutions, liberal arts colleges, tribal
colleges, historically black colleges and universities,
regional comprehensive institutions, and research
universities.
Funding includes Implementation grants of up to
$350,000 for up to 24 months and Planning grants
of up to $25,000 over 12 months.
First-round proposals are due Dec. 1, 2020.
