Close to 100 members and guests of the European Chapter of TEI gathered at the Hotel New York in Disneyland Paris on May 21-22 for the third Chapter meeting of the 2002-2003 season, hosted by member Tony Maggiore of the Richemont Luxury Group.

Chapter President Hilary Robinson welcomed the participants and introduced the chapter's guests from across the Atlantic, TEI International President Drew Glennie and Executive Director Timothy McCormally.

Ms. Robinson reported that the membership of the European Chapter had now reached 160, which means the chapter is well on its way to making its goal of 200 members by June 2004.

Like many other chapters, the European Chapter aims to be a forum for education, networking, and advocacy. The Chapter holds three educational sessions each year, in October, February, and May. Earlier in the membership year, the chapter met in Brussels, featuring a day of technical presentations by Linklaters on European Union Tax Policy, and in Madrid, featuring technical presentations by Jones Day on Permanent Establishment Issues, Virtual Organizations, Cost Sharing, Group Taxation, and European Holding Companies. The technical program at the Paris meeting was devoted to doing business in Switzerland and featured presentations by several professionals from Lenz & Staehelin. In addition, two lawyers from Mayer Brown Row & Maw made presentations on French tax audits and advance pricing agreements.

In addition, the European Chapter has a number of committees and discussion groups that hold conference calls on a regular basis. The current roster of active committees and discussion groups includes Indirect Taxation, Commissionaire...
