Signed into law on Dec. 23, the fiscal year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act contains a host of provisions affecting the Defense Department's cybersecurity capabilities and acquisitions and the department's efforts to adopt artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

The NDAA's focus on streamlining and accelerating cybersecurity and Al-related Defense Department acquisitions could create significant new opportunities for defense contractors. On the other hand, a number of provisions in the NDAA contemplate enhanced Defense Department scrutiny and standards for technology acquisitions in general and advanced AI and autonomous systems in particular.

First, the NDAA encourages the Defense Department to acquire cyber defense solutions, which could create opportunities for defense contractors to provide new cybersecurity-related solutions. To that end, the NDAA authorizes $300 million in cyber defense and security assistance to Taiwan and requires the department to identify mobile device cybersecurity solutions for potential procurement.

Several cybersecurity provisions in the NDAA aim to expand the Defense Department's cyber defense capabilities, potentially in collaboration with defense contractors, including provisions codifying the department's Hackathon program, under which the program will carry out at...
