Admiralty and maritime law is a distinct body of law
that governs legal issues related to the sea, ships, and
maritime activities. This specialized eld of law is inter-
national in nature, reecting the global network of maritime
activities. The scope of practice in admiralty and maritime law is

The Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) Admi-
ralty and Maritime Law Committee (AMLC) is the agship
American Bar Association (ABA) committee dedicated to the
study, promotion, and development of maritime law, which
involves all aspects of legal practice related to maritime activities.
Its mission is to facilitate the exchange of information and
ideas, promote legal research and education in maritime law,
and connect practitioners from across the country.
The lodestar of the AMLC is developing opportunities for
its members, for example, in the form of authorship, promoting
members’ capabilities, participating on professional panels,
fostering leadership opportunities, and developing a pipeline
for future practitioners. The committee is typically composed
of legal professionals, in-house counsel, scholars, law students,
and industry experts with a deep understanding of maritime
law. Members are drawn from a diverse array of backgrounds,
including private practice, academia, government, and the mar-
itime industry itself. This multidisciplinary approach enriches
the committee’s discussions and outputs, ensuring a broad
perspective on the issues at hand.
The committee plays a crucial role in addressing emerging
legal issues and developments within the maritime industry.
This includes topics such as maritime regulations, personal
injury claims, marine insurance, environmental protection, the
rights and welfare of seafarers, and the impact of technological

law in various legal forums, including the determination
of which court has jurisdiction over maritime disputes;
court decisions play a signicant role in shaping the
practice of admiralty and maritime law
• Regulatory compliance: compliance with maritime
regulations and risk management in the maritime

• Ship acquisition and nancing: matters involving
the acquisition, nancing, and registration of ships and
other vessels
• Arbitration and alternative dispute resolution:

The AMLC is an indispensable part of the practice of mar-
