Position13 Alaska regional corporations

The 13 Alaska regional corporations are wealthier and own more private land in the state than any other sector in Alaska. And they continue to enjoy healthy profits.

Arctic Slope Regional Corp. brought in the most 1998 revenues-a whopping $887.5 million, an increase of more than $200 million from 1997. The corporation is within 13 percent of its end-of-decade goal of one billion in sales, according to its annual report.

Diversity seems to be key. Despite ebbs and flows in the oil industry, gross revenue from oil field services more than doubled in 1998 and earnings grew 77 percent over 1997, providing 40 percent of the corporation's revenues. Instrumental is subsidiary Natchiq Inc. and its subsidiaries. Other interests include work in petroleum refining and distribution, construction, environmental services, government services, engineering and manufacturing.

Cook Inlet Region Inc., owned by approximately 6,900 shareholders, increased revenues by nearly $65 million, from $186.2 million in 1997 to $251 million last year. The company's principal lines of business include real estate, construction services and equipment distribution, communications, tourism, natural resources and other investments. Net income was $50.2 million, an increase of 12 percent over 1997 figures and the highest in the company's history.

Meanwhile, the third most profitable of the 13 regional corporations, Southeast's Sealaska, also performed well. Sealaska increased revenues by $53.5 million, from $136 million in 1997 to $189.5 million last year. Sealaska, with 16,000 shareholders, also generates revenue through diversification. Some ventures include Sealaska Timber Corp., the Calder limestone mine (SeaCal), TriQuest Precision Plastics and investments.

Also noteworthy are Ahtna Inc. who increased revenues from $6.5 million in 1997 to $36.4 million last year; Bristol Bay Native Corp. who increased 1997 revenues from $8.6 million to $44.93 million in 1998 and Aleut Corp. who increased 1997 revenues from $40.4 million to $73 million last year.

Equally impressive is the number of subsidiaries owned by these companies. Glance over the following pages and you'll find the regional corporation's hands spread across much of Alaska and across the globe. These 13 Alaska Native regional corporations are healthy indeed.
