seeks applications for the National Sea Grant College
Program FY2020–2021 Special Projects announcement
to encourage research or other projects that are
not normally funded through Sea Grant national
competitions.
Deadline: Sept. 30, 2021.
Funds: $30 million total for up to 30 awards ranging
from $5,000 to $4 million.
Eligibility: Sea Grant programs such as Sea Grant
colleges, institutions or coherent area programs; the
National Sea Grant Law Center; and the National Sea
Grant Library.
Areas: DOC said funding from this announcement
supports projects that address critical issues that require
a more rapid response than can be accommodated by
the normal Sea Grant planning and competition cycle to
be most effective.

Gulf War Illness New Investigator Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications for
the Gulf War Illness (GWI) New Investigator Award
announcement to support investigators new to the eld of
GWI research at different stages of career development.
Deadline: Pre-applications, May 29, 2020; proposals,
Sept. 10, 2020.
Funds: $800,000 total for one award.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: DOD said there is special interest in the
following topics: identication, replication and
validation of treatments that show promise for GWI;
and identication, replication and/or validation of the
causes of and treatment targets for dysregulated
biological system function, with emphasis placed on
cognitive difficulties to include memory decits, mood
and behavior disturbances; non-restorative sleep or
sleep disturbances; chronic widespread pain, chronic
debilitating fatigue and gastrointestinal effects, including
dietary intolerances, gastroesophageal reux disease
and functional gastrointestinal disorders; and sinus and
respiratory effects; among many others.

Gulf War Illness Patient-Provider and Health
Communications Award (DOD)
Scope: The Defense Department’s U.S. Army Medical
Research Acquisition Activity seeks applications
for the Gulf War Illness (GWI) Patient-Provider and
Health Communications Award announcement to
support projects aimed at tools and processes to
raise awareness of GWI research and clinical ndings
within communities, including veterans with GWI and/
or their caregivers or advocates, health care providers
who serve veterans with GWI and/or public health
professionals relevant to veterans with GWI.
Deadline: Pre-applications, May 29, 2020; proposals,
Sept. 10, 2020.
Funds: Approximately $960,000 for one Patient-Provider
and Health Communications Award application.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: DOD said funding will support the development
of health communication strategies, including media,
technical and organizational platforms, and/or other
venues that will disseminate current research ndings
contributing to a state-of-the-science understanding
of GWI. The strategies should encourage adoption of
new evidence-based approaches to understanding,
