I have a close friend who lost her father at the World Trade Center ("Terrorism Hits Home," 10/1/01). Thinking about it is agonizing. I hope that the monstrous people responsible for these attacks are brought to justice. Beneath these feelings, however, is a sense of pride, as I think of the thousands of workers clearing rubble and the thousands of others who gave blood. This feeling tells me that America will go on, braver and stronger than ever before.

Americans' reactions to this tragedy show that even though we spend a lot of time arguing, we can be the indivisible nation described in the Pledge of Allegiance.
