If you're a member of the YouEconomy like millions of other Americans, you're in luck: a Business.org study found that self-employed people tend to make more money than their traditionally employed counterparts. Score!

The same study also looked at the 50 biggest cities in the U.S. to identify which areas were the best for being your own boss. To determine their rankings, they looked at three things:

  1. The number of residents who were self-employed,

  2. The percentage of people who work less than 40 hours per week, and

  3. The median self-employed income in the city. Here were the results.

    Top 5:

  4. Salt Lake City

  5. Los Angeles

  6. Miami

  7. Austin, Texas

  8. Phoenix

    Bottom 5:

  9. Philadelphia

  10. Baltimore

  11. Richmond, Virginia

  12. Boston

  13. Charlotte, North Carolina
