Moving on and Moving Upward:
Final Reflections and Farewell
Andrea D. Ellinger
Editing a journal can be a challenging, demanding, and time-intensive
endeavor that requires dedication and sustained commitment over a signifi-
cant period of time. My commitment to Human Resource Development Quar-
terly ( HRDQ ) began in 1998 when I became a reviewer for the journal. Next,
I served as a two-term editorial board member, and was then appointed
associate editor in 2009. On January 1, 2013, I assumed to role of editor. I
value professionalism, integrity, personal responsibility, hard work, and being
responsive and accessible and have done my best to diligently serve in this
capacity with these core values reflected throughout my term. My appoint-
ment concludes on January 1, 2016, so I will officially “move on,” and I will
be delighted to see HRDQ “move upward” in terms of its impact and rankings
with the very capable and competent leadership of the new incoming trio of
co-editors, Drs. Valerie Anderson, Kim F. Nimon, and Jon M. Werner, and
their respective editorial team colleagues: Drs. Travor Brown, Claire Gubbins,
Thomas Reio, Maura Sheehan, and Seung Won Yoon.
My initial editorial in Volume 24(3), “It Takes A Global Community of
Scholars to Sustain a Journal” (2013) articulated a number of transitions that
required a reenvisioning of the infrastructure in support of HRDQ s opera-
tions. In consultation with other editorial colleagues, a multi–associate edi-
tor platform was deemed to be the optimal configuration for HRDQ given
significant increases in the volume of submissions. For example, in 2009, the
journal received 87 new and revised submissions. With the journal s induc-
tion into Thomson Reuter s SSCI/ISI indexing in 2010, the submissions began
to increase to 129 in 2010, 161 in 2011, 209 in 2012, 255 in 2013, 241 in
2014, and over 215 with one month remaining until the end of 2015. To
ensure timely processing of manuscripts from submission to final decision,
developmentally consolidated feedback, and high-quality content for the jour-
nal across its four annual issues, five esteemed colleagues were identified to
serve as associate editors for HRDQ : Drs. Valerie Anderson, Claire Gubbins,
Kim F. Nimon, Maura Sheehan, and Jon M. Werner, along with our manag-
ing editor, Mary Lynn Lunn, who has been the gracious presence and point
