Roadhouses are an integral part of Alaska's history. Back in the days when our state was a mere territory, the Alaska roadhouse provided lodging and food for travelers and prospectors and was sometimes the only gathering point for miles around. With modern, gleaming hotels now a normal part of our landscape, roadhouses are quaint relics. But those interested in exploring those historical times while still enjoying all of today's modern amenities might want to check out the Motherlode Lodge.

Located in Hatcher Pass, just 50 miles from Anchorage and 15 miles from Palmer and Wasilla, the Motherlode Lodge sits on the banks of the Little Susitna River. It was originally built in 1942 by Victor Cottini. Called the "Little Susitna Roadhouse," the lodge consisted of one main building and three small cabins, one of which still stands near the river today. The property is now owned by Jill Reese, with Carol Hart owning the business, a joint-venture launched in April of 2007.

Hart started her career in the hospitality industry at age 11, helping her father in his hotels and restaurants. She went on to work for the Marriott Corp., where she says she "learned the best lessons in being successful and enjoying the wonderful world of the hospitality industry." A 17-year Alaska resident, Hart entices potential guests with the offer of peace and quiet, great food, plenty of activities and wildlife.

"Look to your left and you may see a bear. Look to your right and you may see a moose. Or look straight ahead and see the delicious food at our cafe!" she says.

There are 10 guestrooms with private baths at the lodge, as well as the historical suite in the remaining original cabin that has four guestrooms and a shared bath.
