The present volume continues the encyclopedic publication of Sanskrit subhasitas begun in 1974 by the late Ludwik Sternbach, who died in 1981. Its predecessor, volume six, appeared thirteen years ago, in 1987. (See review by Ludo Rocher, JAOS 110 [1990]: 539-40, which includes a retrospective of the first six volumes.) The VVRI, under the editorship of Bhaskaran Nair, is to be congratulated for persevering in this massive effort-twenty volumes are contemplated--that will, if present statistics are borne out, bring together nearly forty thousand verses, along with translations, critical apparatus, and many indices--source, author, meter...
