MIP Cancun was held November 16-18, 2016 at the Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel, a deluxe hotel that replaced the JW Marriott, which became too small for the event (the market registered a 70 percent increase from the previous edition).
According to local legend, the Grand Fiesta was originally a five-star hotel. But when the hotel turned down Guatemalan Nobel Peace Price winner Rigoberta Menchu because of her peasant attire, they lost one star.
However, the Grand Fiesta won many stars with the 560 participants from 387 companies (between buyers and sellers) in 46 countries who attended the third edition of MIP Cancun, on the northeast coast of Mexico's Yucatan. Participants who couldn't find accommodation at the Grand Fiesta were relocated across the street to the Krystal Grand Punta.
The event had four components: Pre-scheduled meetings (nine sessions from 9:45 am to 5:30 pm on day one, 13 sessions on day two and five on day three), a total of 24 conferences, four screenings and five summits.
For the pre-scheduled meetings, 141 tables were set up by 135 distribution companies (some had multiple tables). These covered the costs of the whole market, since Latin buyers from TV stations were invited expenses-paid (buyers acquiring for distribution were not comped).
