The article by Tyler E. Boudreau was interesting as far as it went ("To Kill or Not to Kill," February issue). What was not discussed was the brainwashing that Marines undergo to think of the United States as the greatest country on Earth, ever.

Stunned, nay, utterly awed by Tyler E. Boudreau's article, I wish here to express my own thoughts about killing in combat. Let me begin by acknowledging that, virtually from my first day in Korea, I, too, was confronted by the dilemma that he so eloquently expresses.

In Korea, as with all the rest, we were given the mission to kill as many of the "enemy" as possible, and to make friends with the populace. It was often hard to ascertain who were the combatants and who were not.
