This year, Michigan will close three prisons and five prison camps, reported The Detroit News. The closures are intended to save $120 million, helping to shrink the $1.7 billion budget deficit in the next fiscal year. The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) will have to lay off 1,000 employees; and 4,000 inmates who have served at least their minimum prison sentence will be released.
