Michael
J.
Hindelang,
former
Associate
Editor
of
the
Journal
of
Research
in
Crime
and
Delinquency
(1977-80)
died
on
March
27,
after
an
illness
of
several
years.
Mike
was
a
professor
at
the
School
of
Criminal
Justice,
State
University
of
New
York
at
Albany,
and
founder
of
the
Criminal
Justice
Research
Center.
He
is
survived
by
his
wife,
Mary
Lee
Newell.
Mike
received
his
bachelor’s
degree
in
psychology
in
1966
and
his
master’s
degree
in
social
psychology
in
1967
from
Wayne
State
University.
He
received
his
master’s
degree
in
criminology
in
1968
and
a
doctorate
in
criminology
in
1969
from
the
University
of
California
at
Berkeley.
After
teaching
briefly
at
California
State
University
at
Los
Angeles
and
the
University
of
Washington
at
Seattle,
Mike
joined
the
faculty
in
Albany
in
1970
and
was
appointed
a
full
professor
in
1976.
In
addition
to
his
role
with
the
Journal
of
Research
in
Crime
and
Delinquency,
Mike
served
as
associate
editor
of
the
American
Sociological
Review,
and
was
on
the
editorial
boards
of
the
Journal
of
Criminal
Justice,
Criminology,
and
Law
and
Human
Behavior.
He
served
as
consultant
to
numerous
commissions,
research
projects,
and
criminal
justice
agencies.
Mike’s
research
interests
lay
primarily
in
the
assessment
of
sources
of
crime
data,
the
correlates
of
crime,
and
the
use
of
crime
data
for
testing
theories
of
crime
causation.
In
addition
to
many
journal
articles,
he
authored
Criminal
Victimization
in
Eight
American
Cities,
and
co-authored
Victims
of
Personal
Crime
and
Measuring
Delinquency.
He
created
and
edited
eight
volumes
of the
Sourcebook
of
Criminal
Justice
Statistics.
Mike’s
scholarly
energy
seemed
boundless,
and
his
productivity
in
the
only
slightly
more
than
a
decade
available
to
him
was
immense.
His
broad
influence
on
criminological
thinking,
as
well
as
his
direct
effect
on
his
students
and
his
colleagues,
will
be
long
lasting.
A
Michael
J.
Hindelang
Memorial
Scholarship
has
been
established
at
the
State
University
of
New
York.
