Mexico won't enforce data protection law until 2012.

Although Mexico's data protection law takes effect in July, the country's data protection authority, the Instituto Federal De Acceso a la Informacion y Proteccion de Datos (IFAI), will not rush to enforce it.

When the Federal Law Protecting Personal Data in Private Possession is published, the government said it expects businesses and other covered entities to follow the basic requirements: Appoint an individual to lead data protection efforts and establish written data security and privacy policies.

But the government will not immediately begin verification activity, IFAI President Commissioner Jacqueline Peschard Mariscal said. Instead, the IFAI will initially focus on training and educating covered entities on the rule's requirements.

The new data protection law regulates for the first time on a federal level how businesses and individuals handle personal data.
